Choose the right tool, even if it isn't this one

The usual choices for team writing, and when each fits better. We compare kinds of tools, not named products. Reviewed November 2026.

Colletta or docs and wiki editors

Choose docs and wiki editors if

You want databases, rich page structure, a large ecosystem of integrations, or AI features built in. They also suit people who never write markdown.

Choose Colletta if

Your team writes markdown and wants to keep it as plain files. Write in a formatted view or in the markdown itself, and download any document you have permission to export as a .md file.

Colletta or desktop markdown apps

Choose desktop markdown apps if

You mostly write alone, want files on your own disk, work offline for long stretches, or rely on plugins.

Choose Colletta if

Several people need to write in the same document at the same time, in the browser, with nothing to install and access you can change in one place.

Colletta or markdown in git

Choose markdown in git if

Your docs live next to code, every change should go through review, and the team is comfortable with branches and pull requests.

Choose Colletta if

You want to draft together in real time first, then download the documents you can export and add the files to the repository. A GitHub backup and two-way sync are planned.

What Colletta doesn't do

So you can rule it out quickly if one of these matters to you.

  • Spreadsheets, databases or kanban boards inside documents.
  • Working offline: edits made during a drop are kept on your device when your browser allows storage, but you need a connection to open a document.
  • Hosting a public website or wiki: a public link shares one document at a time.
  • Two-way sync with git. Downloads are markdown, and a GitHub backup is planned.
  • Open sign-up. Access is by invitation during the private beta.
