Live, Source and Split views

Every document is one markdown file, and you can look at it three ways. Switching views never changes the file, so pick whichever suits you. Use the View buttons in the document header.

  • Live formats the document as you type. Markdown symbols show only on the line you’re editing, so the page reads like a finished document.
  • Source shows the plain markdown text with every symbol visible: exactly what’s in the file.
  • Split puts the markdown on the left and the formatted preview on the right, scrolling together.

We keep our docs in git, but nobody edits them together.

Wants plain files and live editing

- Uses make docs to publish every Friday

Try the switch: the same document in Live, Source and Split. Split is available on wider screens.

The view you pick with the buttons becomes your default for every document. You can also set it in Editor settings under Default view.

Nobody else is affected. A teammate can write in Source while you write in Live, in the same document at the same time.

Scroll the markdown or the preview and the other side follows. In the preview, a plain click opens a link.

Below about 700 pixels wide there’s no room for Split, so a document set to Split shows in Live. On a phone, switch between Live view and Source view from the More menu.
