Mentions and notifications

Notifications tell you when someone needs you: a mention, or a reply in a conversation you’re part of. They collect in the bell at the top of the sidebar.

  • In a comment: type @ and pick a name. You can mention workspace members who can open the document.
  • In a document: type @ to mention a person, a team or a date. See Mentions and dates.
  • Someone mentions you in a comment.
  • Someone replies in a thread you started or commented in.
  • Someone mentions you, or a team you belong to, in a document you can open. This arrives about a minute after they stop typing, once per document and author.
  • New suggestions in documents you edit, and what happened to your own suggestions. See Suggestions.
  • You’re added as a co-author of a draft, or a draft you co-author is published. See Drafts.
  • A task is assigned to you. See Assign a task.

You’re never notified about your own comments or mentions.

For a busy document you don’t need to follow, open its More menu (…) and untick Notify me. While it’s off:

  • you’re not told about replies in its comment threads,
  • and you’re not told when one of your teams is mentioned in it.

You’re still notified when someone mentions you by name, in a comment or in the text. Tick Notify me again to get everything back. The setting is yours alone and applies only to that document.

The bell shows how many are unread. Open it and choose a notification to go to that comment, or to the heading above the mention in a document; it’s then marked read. Mark all read clears the rest.

Notifications appear in the bell in Colletta. They aren’t sent by email. If you use a screen reader, new notifications are also read out (see Accessibility).
