Images

There are a few ways in:

  • Paste an image you copied. This works when the clipboard holds only an image, not text.
  • Drop an image file onto the document.
  • Choose a file with the toolbar’s Image button, or Image in the slash menu.
  • Take a photo, on a phone or tablet: the Add image dialog has a Take a photo button that opens the camera.

Images can be PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP. SVG files aren’t accepted. During the private beta the limit is 10 MB per image. A larger still photo is made smaller to fit where possible, and refused if it can’t be. GIFs are never resized, so one over the limit is refused. Keep animated PNG and WebP images within the limit, or they may lose their animation. A document can hold up to 100 MB of images, and each member’s and the workspace’s image space have limits too. Owners and Admins can see these limits in Plan and usage.

In the Add image dialog, fill in Description (alt text). Screen readers read it aloud, and it shows if the image can’t load. After a paste or a drop, the description is selected in the text so you can type over it straight away.

Only people who can open the document can see its images.

Photos often carry hidden details, such as where they were taken. When you upload an image, Colletta removes its location (GPS), camera information and other embedded metadata. The only thing kept is a JPEG’s rotation, so photos stay the right way up.

In Live view, either:

  • hover the image and drag its corner, or
  • put the cursor on the image’s line and press Ctrl+Alt+= to make it larger or Ctrl+Alt+- to make it smaller (Cmd+Option on a Mac).

The size is saved in the markdown: ![description|300](...) is 300 pixels wide, and ![description|300x200](...) sets the width and height. Sizes from 16 to 4000 pixels are used; anything else is ignored. Undo works as usual if you change your mind.
